What does the Capital One and Discover transition mean for my linked accounts?

As part of Discover becoming part of Capital One, Discover accounts are gradually being migrated to Capital One's online banking platform. This transition is happening in phases, and Capital One and Discover will communicate directly with customers about when their accounts are being migrated and any steps they need to take.

What might I notice during the transition?

If your Discover account has been migrated, you may notice that it becomes disconnected in NerdWallet. This is expected. You'll need to reconnect the account through our third-party account-linking partner, Plaid, using Capital One's secure sign-in process.

As Discover accounts transition to Capital One, you may temporarily notice unexpected behavior with your linked Discover or Capital One accounts in NerdWallet, including:

  • Missing Discover or Capital One accounts

  • Duplicate accounts

  • Missing or incomplete account information

  • Delayed or duplicated transactions

These issues may occur as your financial institution completes the migration and account information is updated within Plaid's systems. While it will impact your Net Worth, some issues may resolve as the migration progresses, while others may require you to reconnect your account through Capital One.

What will happen to my Discover account on my TransUnion credit report?

As Discover accounts transition to Capital One, you may also notice a change in how your account is identified on your TransUnion credit report. An account that previously appeared under Discover may begin appearing under Capital One.

This change does not mean a new account or credit history has been created. Your existing tradeline and its account history will remain intact and continue to update; only the name associated with the tradeline may change as the transition progresses.

Because accounts are transitioning at different times, you may not see this change immediately.

What should I do if my account isn’t syncing?

If your Discover account is no longer syncing in NerdWallet:

  1. Select Reconnect or Fix connection for your disconnected account.

  2. Sign in using the Capital One connection when prompted, rather than the Discover connection.

  3. Complete Capital One's secure authentication process to authorize access to your account.

  4. Once you've successfully reconnected, your account should begin syncing again.

Why can't I reconnect through Discover?

Once your account has been migrated, it is managed through Capital One instead of Discover. You'll use Capital One's website or mobile app to manage your migrated account, and third-party apps like NerdWallet will connect to it through Capital One's secure authentication process.

Will I lose my transaction history?

In most cases, reconnecting your account allows NerdWallet to resume syncing your account information. However, the amount of historical transaction data available depends on the information provided by the financial institution. As a result, some previous transactions may not be available after you reconnect.

Once your connection has been restored, new transactions should begin syncing as usual.

I haven't received a migration notice yet. Should I reconnect now?

Not necessarily. Discover accounts are being migrated in phases, so not everyone will transition at the same time. If your Discover account is still syncing normally with NerdWallet, there's no action you need to take.

Capital One or Discover will communicate with you directly about your account migration and any steps you need to take. Once your account has migrated, you can reconnect it to NerdWallet if needed.

I'm having trouble reconnecting my account

If you're unable to reconnect your account:

  • Confirm that you've completed any migration steps provided by Capital One or Discover.

  • Make sure you're signing in through the Capital One connection rather than the Discover connection.

  • If your account was recently migrated, try again later. It may take some time for your account information to become available to connected apps.

  • If you're still unable to connect, contact NerdWallet Support via our chat modal and let us know what error message you're seeing so we can investigate.

For more information about your account migration, visit Capital One's Discover transition resources or refer to communications you've received directly from Capital One or Discover.
