If you received this email, the most likely cause is one of the common technical issues described below.
First, some background: your location is determined by your IP address, which can differ from your physical location by a significant distance. If your internet service provider uses IP addresses from outside your physical location, or is located elsewhere, or if you're using a VPN, it could indicate a different state or even country, prompting this alert.
The email you received is triggered any time an unrecognized device is used to log in to your account. This can happen even from a device you've used before.
Common actions that will prompt this "new device" message include:
-
Logging in on your normal device but using a different internet browser.
-
Clearing your device cache (in the case of a phone/tablet).
- When our account linking partner Plaid retrieves updated transaction details from your linked bank accounts, this will appear as a new login activity prompting an email notification.
-
Logging in using an incognito window or private browsing window.
- Using privacy add-ons or browsers with special privacy settings, like Microsoft Edge.
If you received an email that you've logged in to your NerdWallet account from a new device, none of the above bullet points apply, and you did not knowingly log in from a new device, you can secure your account by changing your password. See this article for instructions.
