Hey NerdWallet, I Didn't Sign Up For This!

This article is for people who compared financial products (such as loans or insurance) on NerdWallet, received an email from us, and do not remember creating an account or setting a password.

Updated over a month ago

If this happened to you, you’re not being scammed by NerdWallet — and you’re not alone.

What’s Actually Happening

When you compare financial products on NerdWallet, an account record can be created automatically, even if you never chose a password or logged in.

This type of account does not behave like a traditional sign-up, which is why it can feel surprising to receive a welcome or account-related email.

The account was not created by a third party and is not fraudulent — but it does exist in our system.

Why You’re Receiving NerdWallet Emails

Some NerdWallet emails are transactional emails. These include:

  • Account status notifications

  • Legal or regulatory notices

  • Privacy and policy updates

Transactional emails cannot be unsubscribed from. They continue to be sent as long as an account exists.

Important: Unsubscribing from marketing emails alone will not stop all NerdWallet emails.

How to Stop All NerdWallet Emails Permanently

To permanently stop all NerdWallet emails, the account must be deactivated.

For clarity:

  • Deactivate account, close account, and stop all emails all mean the same thing

  • We do not delete accounts as part of this process

Your Two Options to Deactivate the Account

Option 1: Deactivate the account yourself (fastest)

You can set a password on the account and deactivate it yourself.

  • This does not mean you intentionally signed up

  • It simply gives you control to close the account immediately

  • Once the account is deactivated, all NerdWallet emails stop

This option is always available as long as no Atomic account has been created. If you never logged in, you could not have set up an Atomic account.

This is the fastest way to resolve the issue.

Option 2: Ask NerdWallet Support to deactivate it for you (slower)

If you do not want to set a password, you can submit a request for NerdWallet Support to deactivate the account on your behalf.

  • This requires review by a human agent

  • Processing time depends on current support volume

  • Emails will continue until the account is actually deactivated

There is no faster manual process than this, and this request is not prioritized.

What About Emails From Lenders or Insurance Companies?

If you connected with lenders or insurers during your comparison, those companies may contact you directly.

These emails do not come from NerdWallet, and we cannot unsubscribe you from them. Each company manages its own communications under its own privacy policy.

To stop those messages, you must contact those companies directly.

Is This a Scam?

This situation can feel alarming because:

  • The account does not behave like a traditional sign-up

  • No password was created initially

  • You are asked to take action on something you do not remember creating

That reaction is understandable.

What’s important to know is that the account exists because of how product comparison flows work — not because of fraud or misuse of your information.

Summary

  • You did not do anything wrong

  • An account record exists even without a password

  • Emails will not stop unless the account is deactivated

  • The fastest option is to set a password and deactivate the account yourself

  • Waiting for support is an option, but it takes longer

Once the account is deactivated, no further action is required.
