Last year in August, I missed my credit card payment by 9-10 days, with American Express. When I called to pay the bill, they told me they already sold the debt to a collection agency. 9 days after?? Really. The amount was like $600. Since the sold the debt to a collection agency, American Express is still charging me late fees and reporting late payments. The payment now is closer to $750 because of the late payments they charge for the debt they don't own anymore. So, are These companies allowed to report it late even if they do not own the debt anymore? And are they allowed to charge late fees after they sold the debt? Is this legal?
