    Welcome to the community, Tiffany!

It's not currently possible to add custom categories, but you're not the first person to ask about this and we are tracking these requests. We'll be sure to let you know if this feature becomes available in the future.

    Good morning, Sara -

I've just submitted a question to Customer Service about this as well; I'd find it incredibly helpful to be able to add our own custom categories. That said, at this moment I believe all I'm lacking are transactions for Debt, and Giving/Donations.

I hope NerdWallet will consider these queries!

    Thank you,

    -isaac.

    Hi Isaac,

Thanks for taking the time to share your thoughts with us! I can definitely see how those categories would be useful to many of our members. We're tracking your suggestion and will let you know if we're able to add these options 🙂

This was 3 years ago, I feel like this feature should be one of the first to be implemented. Custom categories and subcategories are essential for being able to truly track your expenses. Any established tracking app has this (ex Mint).

Is there an update for when this will actually happen?

Thanks for posting to the Community Forum, JMB!

We recently added some new categories for transactions (such as pets and donations), and with the newest version (10.17) of our phone app, we've added the ability to filter and sort transactions by categories, date period, accounts, and more.

Our engineers are looking into in a way to integrate customizable categories with our budgeting, bills, and other tools. While we can't give a time estimate as to when we'll be able to accomplish this, we do plan to offer this feature. Thanks for your feedback!

    Best Regards,

    Victor

Victor, it's been 9 months. With Mint, the budgeting app I've used for 5 years, being transferred to Credit Karma and confirming to me that CK will NOT have custom categories, I am shopping for a new budgeting app. But custom categories are essential as it help me be the most accurate with my finances. Has NerdWallet integrated that or will it be within the next month?

P.S. Remember, custom categories can be nested within macro-categories. I.e. Rail & Transport doesn't change, but allowing us to add "Train Travel" as a custom category is a way it can be easily implemented.

    Hi Joseph -

Thanks for reaching out, and for giving NerdWallet a try!

Through NerdWallet, you’re able to link your bank accounts to track spending, and set up your upcoming bills so you can keep an eye on your cash flow. We track your income, expenses, and upcoming bills, so you know exactly how much you can save or spend. Find out more about all of our available features here.

While this information can provide valuable insight into your cash flow; we are not a budgeting app, specifically. We currently offer an automated view into your 50/30/20 budget breakdown using your connected accounts. Custom categories aren't yet available, and we're sorry to say we cannot provide a time estimate of when they may be available.

    Best regards,

    Victor

This is such an incredibly basic feature request, regardless of whether it's officially a budgeting app or not. I can't believe it's still not supported.

I would like to add my great desire for custom categories to this list. I just moved over from Personal Capital (aka Empower) since it was having problems downloading all my transactions, and so far, I'm not happy with Nerdwallet. 1) I am not able to link a few of my accounts (although Empower could handle them) 2) I cannot modify the list of categories 3) I am finding it quite confusing to find my way around.
