Can the Nerd Wallet "Learn" what merchants go to which categories?

I have linked credit cards to my Nerd Wallet account so that I can track transactions.  I want to see what I spend in different categories, for example utilities, gas or dining out.

Will the program “learn” what merchants belong in what categories, for example Chevron = gas, Vons = Groceries and, Chipotle = Fast food.  Can I modify the categories? Will the system go back and change past transactions once if “learns” the categories?

  Thanks for posting to the NerdWallet Community Forum! We definitely want your spending totals to be correct.

   

  The good news is that if a transaction's category isn't registering correctly, you can easily edit it by following these steps:

   

  • Select the transaction you want to edit
  • Choose the appropriate category from the dropdown menu
  • Choose whether you want to update all transactions from this merchant to reflect the new category (this feature is only available in the phone app.) 

   

  Note that changing a credit card payment to transfer will remove the seemingly "duplicate" transaction from your spending totals.
